HORN, LAFAYETTE SMITH, JR. - formerly of Nashville, Tennessee, our precious Papa, went home to be with our Lord and our beloved mother, Friday evening, March 21, 2014, at West Hills Health and Rehab. He was born in Monterey, Tennessee, on December 10, 1921, and was married to the love of his life, Myra Venus Bow Horn, from 1945 until her death from cancer in 1991. His cherished second wife, Eleanor Wooten Horn, also preceded him in death; as well as his parents, LaFayette Smith Horn, Sr. and Dorothy Ruth Horn; his youngest brother, William (Bill) Horn (who died in the Battle of the Bulge on New Year's Day 1945 at the age of 20); and his next youngest brother, Albert Horn. He is survived by his identical twin daughters, Leah Ruth Horn and Myra Evelyn Horn; his Granddog, Baron; one younger brother and sister-in-law, Leon and Dot Horn; sister-in-law, Jane Horn; special "son" and hiking buddy, Joseph Anderson Walker. Fate, as he was known, joined the Navy on December 10, 1941, his 20th birthday and three days after Japan bombed Pearl Harbor, then spent Christmas, 1941, in Pearl Harbor, Territory of Hawaii, followed by four years in the Navy in the South Pacific corridor. After being honorably discharged from the Navy, he went to Vanderbilt University on the GI Bill and received his masters in business with a minor in psychology just a week after the birth of his twins in May, 1949. From college he spent the first part of his career in the mercantile industry as a buyer then joined the Baptist Sunday School Board (currently known as Lifeway Christian) in 1958, serving his first four years as regional director of all the Baptist bookstores west of the Mississippi. In 1962 Fate and his family were transferred to Birmingham, Alabama, where Fate built a new Baptist bookstore and managed if for the next 10 years. During his tenure as store manager, the Birmingham store led all the Baptist bookstores in the country in sales and all other categories with Fate and his store winning top awards given by the Sunday School Board. Fate's leadership and accomplishments raised the bar for achievement for all other existing and future stores of the Sunday School Board. Fate was also a leader in the area of civil rights, welcoming the Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr. into the store on many occasions and having lunch with Dr. King in one of the few establishments in the area that would allow white and black patrons to eat together. Fate also began hiring African Americans to hold various positions in the store at a time when doing so was critically unpopular. In 1972 Fate and his family returned to Nashville, Tennessee, after his daughters graduated from college. He became instrumental in the development and success of the Sunday School Board's new mail order center, where he was director until his retirement in 1988. Upon retirement, Fate and his family moved to Knoxville where he could be closer to the mountains he loved. He was a member of the Smokey Mountain Hiking Club for over 25 years until his right hip broke in 2004, rendering him unable to continue hiking and doing trail maintenance on the Appalachian Trail he loved so much. A memorial service may be planned for a future date in Nashville, Tennessee.
