Barbara grew up with a large family including five sisters and three brothers. Barbara graduated high school in Missouri and later graduated college from Delaware with a degree in construction. Barbara married Gene Harrington in 1975 and had two children, Toni and Scott. Barbara remarried Jerome Ketterling in 1982 and celebrated seven years of marriage, which included lots of travel and taking in foreign culture. In 1992, BJ married her husband Timothy Hanifen of the last 17 years. They spent most of that time in Montana, raising a garden, spending time with their children and grandchildren, Lander, Jacob, Paige, Peyton and Bella, and spoiling their three Dachshunds, Doc, Molly and Cricket.
