    3. [S1429] Murder of William Townsend - Daily Selma Reporter 30 Oct 1834, (Name: The Daily Selma Reporter; Location: Selma AL; Date: 17 Nov 1838;), Shocking Affair.
On the 30th October, about 4 o'clock, AM as Mr. William Townsend, (of the county) was crossing a fence, near his Distilling Establishment, a gun was fired at him, which took effect, the load passing into his left side, and ranging upwards towards his liver and right lung. He survived about 27 or 8 hours. He saw the assassin, and supposed him to be a Negro Fellow of his own, that had previously attempted to poison him, and who was then in the woods. Ha pursued the murderer some twenty or thirty steps, but not being able to come up with him, desisted, and with difficulty and great pain reached his house. Thus we have daily samples of the uncertainty of human life, and that in the midst of life, we are in death.
