Dorothy was a member of the Belmont Methodist Church, where she enjoyed attending Sunday school. She also loved her kindergarten class, and had many little friends at both places.

Dorothy was abducted on September 19th, 1934, as she was walking home from her kindergarten class . Many efforts, including fulfilling a ransom, were made to try and recover her, but to no avail. She was found murdered on November 13th. Several people were questioned, but nobody was ever charged with her death.

Her funeral service was held at the Belmont Methodist Church on the afternoon of November 16th, 1934. Dr. B.B. Pennington, pastor at Belmont, and Dr. Alfred Franklin Smith, officiated. Honorary pallbearers were Dorothy's friends from her kindergarten and her Sunday school. She was buried at the Woodlawn Cemetery directly following the service.

Dorothy was survived by her father, Alfred Edgar Distelhurst; mother, Ruby Hamilton; sister, Martha Jane Distelhurst; brother, Alfred Edgar Distelhurst, Jr.; as well as many distant relatives and friends.

She was predeceased by her maternal grandfather, John J. Hamilton (1918); maternal grandmother Charlotte H. Hamilton (1932); and elder infant brother (1922)
