Sheriff J. C. Spiceland of Stewart county and deputies were this afternoon using bloodhounds secured at Sebree, Ky in an effort to trail the slayer of P. L. Cobb, aged farmer who was found beaten to death in his home a mile and a half north of this place in the Third district of Stewart county this morning.
Mr. Cobb's body, partially under a bed in his room was found by his son, Basil Cobb who lives on a nearby farm. A blood-stained broomstick was also found In the room and is thought to have been one of the weapons used to slay the aged farmer who had lived alone in the home for about two years.
Although robbery was assigned as the motive for the slaying of Mr. Cobb; it was stated that there was little, If any, money in the home. There were no tenants on the farm, Mr. Cobb being the only person living on the place. Hundreds of people visited the farm this morning and this afternoon and offered their services to Sheriff Spiceland in finding clues to the slayers.
Mr. Cobb was one of Stewart county's most prominent farmers for many years. His age was stated, to have been between 75 and 80 years. He had not been active in farm work for a number of years, however, due to his advanced age.
Among Mr. Cobb's children are two daughters residing in Clarksville, Mrs. Charles Taylor, Main street, and Miss Lillian Cobb, an employe of Mason & Hughes. A brother, C. B. Cobb, lives at Big Rock, and two sons, Basil and Latham Cobb, live near Big Rock.
The disorder condition of the room indicated, a severe struggle between Mr. Cobb and his assailant. It was believed that Mr. Cobb had collapsed in an effort to reach the bed after the encounter.
Interviewed here this afternoon as she was awaitlnga bus to go to Big Rock Mrs. Taylor, the daughter, said that interment for Mr. Cobb would likely take place some time tomorrow in the cemetery on the home place of his father, the late Alex Cobb.
Mr. Cobb, she said, was a native and lifelong resident of ihe Big Rock community, and although he had sold the farm on which he lived to a nephew. Stanley Cobb, he had continued to live alone on it for the past two years. He was 77 years of age on September 2, 1930.
He was a son of the late Alex and Mrs. Margaret Hargraves Cobb, and was three times married. His first was Miss Vivian Tanner, and his second marriage was to Miss Rody Yarbrough. His third wife also preceded him in death a few years ago.
His sons and daughters include Taylor and Miss Lillian Cobb of this city; Mrs. Maggie Hodges of Chicago; Basil, Lathan, Haley and Bristol Cobb. He also leaves two brothers. Cyrus B. Cobb of Big Rock, and Bithe Cobb, of Mayfield, Ky The sons and daughters are children of his first marriage. Mr. Cobb was a member of the Baptist church at Big Rock.
