      Elmer Huff, 50-year-old farmer, is in jail here on a first degree murder charge following a voluntary confession, according to authorities, to the killing of Henry Mayes, farm youth shot from ambush 31 years ago today. Huff and his fa ther, Andrew Huff, were charged with the crime shortly after it was committed, but the case was dis missed because of lack of evidence. "Huff came to me last Tuesday," Prosecuting Attorney Thomas A. Matthews said, "and Sheriff Roy Presnell and I listened to his story, the strangest I've ever heard." Matthews said Huff related he had been so disturbed over the kill ing that he could not sleep. Trouble between the Huffs and Mayes arose over a crop dispute, according to Matthews' account of Elmer Huffs story. The families had formerly been close friends. Huff's father and Mayes, then 22 years old, became violently angry during the argument and Huff, then 18, sided with his father. Two days before the killing Elmer Huff saw Mayes ride, by on his way to town. The prosecutor quoted Huff as saying he hid in a thicket and, armed with a shotgun, shot Mayes as he rode homeward on May 24, 1904. Huff and his father were arrested shortly after the shooting, bound over for trial on murder charges and informations were filed against them in Circuit Court. The case was dismissed after a number of delays, due to lack of evi dence, and went unsolved.
