- [S2622] Death of Charles Stanley - Bangor Daily News - 5 Sep 1987, (Name: The Bangor Daily News; Location: Bangor, Maine; Date: 5 Sep 1987;), Camden fisherman dies • Charles Stanley.
A Camden fisherman injured in a freak accident aboard his 78-foot fishing boat died less than 48 hours later in a hospital in Hyannis, Mass, the US Coast Guard reported Friday.
The victim was identified as Charles Stanley, 40, a crewman aboard the Enterprise out of New Harbor. A nursing supervisor at Cape Cod Hospital said no information was available on the cause of death pending a medical examiner’s ruling.
But Petty Officer Bill James of the Coast Guard cutter Sanibel said Stanley apparently suffered a massive stroke caused by the swelling of the carotid artery. Stanley was injured around 3 am Wednesday when a loop of wire became wrapped around his neck as he was hauling in nets flinging him over the side and into the water, James said.
Other crew members managed to rescue Stanley who suffered cable burns on his neck but no other visible injuries and was able to walk to his cabin unassisted. The boat's call for medical assistance drew a response from the Rockland-based Sanibel which was on patrol about 90 miles southeast of Portland. Emergency medical technicians from the Sanibel examined Stanley and found nothing beyond the neck bums
“He was talking, and he said he felt fine” James said. But soon after he was transferred to the Sanibel as a precautionary measure Stanley’s condition worsened.
