Joseph Butler was a lieutenant in the Concord Minuteman company commanded by Captain Nathan Barrett, in the Middlesex regiment under the command of Colonel Abijah Pierce and Major John Buttrick on April 19,1775, the first day of the American Revolution. He fought at the Old North Bridge in Concord, and helped to pursue the Redcoats back to Boston. On May 23, 1775, Joseph Butler was confirmed and commissioned as Captain of the First Company of the 16th Massachusetts Bay (5th Middlesex County) Provincial Regiment commanded by Colonel John Nixon. He fought at the Battle of Bunker Hill on June 17, 1775, serving with his company behind the "rail fence" on Breed's Hill, and his company was amongst the last to retreat at the end of the battle. In December of 1775 Joseph Butler became the proprietor of the famous Wright's Tavern, now a National Historic Site, where the minutemen gathered on April 19, 1775 before going out to fight the British at the Battle of Concord.
