Fred Edward Brookes, 89, of Bushy Hill Road, former Democratic first selectman and state legislator for Haddam, died Wednesday at a Deep River convalescent hospital. He served for several years as first selectman of Haddam and later as a state representative in 1923. He served as high sheriff of Middlesex County from 1941 to 1943 and was a charter member of Haddam Fire department; He ran a dairy farm in Essex and later developed it into a horse farm and riding academy. He leaves a daughter, Mrs. Dorothy Pearson of Essex; two sons, Fred A. Brookes of Haddam and Arthur Brookes of Essex; a brother, Whitney Brookes of Haddam, five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. The funeral is Friday at 2 p.m. in Robinson and Wright Funeral Home, Main Street with the Rev. James Edmondson, pastor of the First Congregational Church of Haddam, officiating.
