MRS JOSHUA HOPPER, who died January 18 at the home of her son, Ben F, Hopper, in this city, had been a resident of Oregon since 1865.
Mrs. Hopper was born in Jefferson county, Illinois, August 22, 1848, where her girlhood days were spent. March 22, 1865, she was married to Joshua Hopper, coming to the Grande Ronde valley the same year. They resided in this valley continuously until seven years ago when they moved to Nolan, Oregon.
Mrs Hopper united with the First Baptist church of La Grande, Oregon in February 1891, and has since been an earnest and consecrated member of this church. Much Interest had been taken by the children and grand-children in anticipation of the golden wedding anniversary, which would have been celebrated March 23 of this year.
Fifteen children were born to Mr and Mrs Hopper, all of whom are living with the exception of one son. Albert B Hopper, who died in 1883.
Those who survive her are her husband, Joshua Hopper, and the following children: Mrs. Clara Hopper Straton, of Seattle WA; Mrs JL Corbett, Ashland OR; Mrs JP Stack, Phoenix AZ; Edward Hopper of Pendleton; Walter and Oscar Hopper of La Grande; Mrs John Synhorst, Miles City MT; Mrs Wesley Andrews, Baker OR; Thomas R. Hopper of Mount Hood; Ben F Hopper of La Grande; Mrs CW Strayer of Los Angeles; Cleve Hopper of La Grande; Mrs Bert Wait of Seattle; Mrs CL Dalnard of La Grande; also 23 grand children and three great grandchildren. Those of her grandchildren who were present at her bed-side were Mrs Georgia Reid of Seattle, Miss Bessie Corbett of Salem OR; Mrs Hazel Childers and daughter Adlarose of Walla Walla, Aladyne and Ferd Synhorst of Miles City MT; Reba, Neva and Ruby Hopper of La Grande.

This afternoon Rev Sitton at the Baptist church preached the funeral sermon over the remains of Joshua Hopper, pioneer of Grande Ronde Valley, who died Saturday. Mr Hopper was 81 years of age and came to this valley with the old ox team over the Old Oregon Trail. He was in the hardware business in South La Grande sixty years ago and during his lifetime he had been prominent in Democratic politics, having served as county treasurer for several terms, and also having attended several national conventions of the Democratic party as a delegate from Oregon.
He had been married for fifty years and was the father of fifteen children, fourteen of whom are living. In 1915, his wife passed on, since which time the deceased has lived with some of his children.
Among those attending the funeral services today are Ira F Keown, Mrs SB Wilson, Roland Hopper and wife, Phil Hawley and wife, Phillip Smith and wife, Wesley Andrews and wife, of Baker, Charles D Martin and wife of Walla Walla, Mrs Joseph Stratton of Seattle, Thomas Hopper and wife, of Mt Hood, Francis Watts and wife of Los Angeles, Ed Hopper of Pendleton.

• Mrs Sabre Hopper, Umatilla County pioneer woman, and grandmother of a host of people in this city, died at her home at Nolin at 6 o'clock this morning from the effects of Illness brought on by old age. Up to this time the exact time for her funeral has not been set, but it is understood that the burial will occur here tomorrow afternoon or on Thursday forenoon. Mrs Hopper was a native of Tennessee and was born on December 26, 1835. She was therefore more than 92 years of age at the time of her death. Her husband. Benjamin Hopper, has been dead for over 25 years.
With her husband, Mrs Hopper crossed the plains with an ox team in '65, and the family settled at Nolin, where they have lived permanently ever since and where Mr Hopper died.
Four sons and two daughters of the deceased are now alive and mourn her end. They are Nowell Hopper, Joshua Hopper, Bura Hopper, Thomas Hopper, Mrs. Jerry Barnhart and Mrs. M. A. Terry. Aside from the sons and daughters, the pioneer woman is survived by 67 grandchildren and a number at nieces and nephews. Among the granddaughters are Mrs TB Swearingen and Mrs William Baker. Tracy Baker, the high school student, is a great-grandson.
During her long residence here the deceased became well known to all old residents of the county and especially to those who came to the county in the very early days.
