Edmund B. Reed Jr., 62, of 17 Bates Street, a retired funeral director, died Friday at a Bar Harbor hospital after several months of ill health. He was born at Tremont, May 23 1902, the son of Edmund and Katharyn (Murphy) Reed. Mr Reed graduated from Eastern State Normal School at Castine and the New England Institute of Anatomy and Funeral Directing at Boston. He owned and operated the Reed Funeral Home at - Millinocket for 30 years, selling the business In September, 1963 due to ill health. He was very active in several Millinocket organizations. He was a member of Nolleemic Lodge of Masons, an honorary member of the Kiwanis Club of Katahdin, a member of Anah Temple Shrine of Bangor, a member and deacon of the First Congregational Church of Millinocket. He had served for six years on the board of embalment and funeral directors of the State of Maine and was an honorary member of the Maine Funeral Directors Association. Survivors are his parents of McKinley; his widow, Mrs Martha (Smith) Reed of Millinocket; one son, David E Reed of the U. S. Air Force of Dow AFB, Bangor, and McKinley; and two grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Monday at 2 pm at the First Congregational Church at Millinocket with the Rev Donald M. Thompson officiating. Friends may call at the Reed Funeral Home, 281 Penobscot Avenue, Saturday from 7 to 9 p. m. and Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p. m. Intement will be in the family lot at the Millinocket Cemetery.
