    5. [S3038] Obituary of Astrid Olafsen, (Name: Tempe Mortuary; Location: Tempe, Arizona; Date: 14 Jul 2020;), Astrid Guri Olafsen Obituary.
Astrid Guri Olafsen, 72, left her earthly home in Tempe, Arizona on July 14, 2020. Her first home was Baltimore, Maryland, residing there from birth on March 29, 1948, until her brother, Peter, entered the scene. Her parents, Alexandra I. Olafsen and Paul N. Olafsen, then moved with their babies to Houston, Texas.
In her later years it would be hard to guess the next color of Astrid’s hair, but during her childhood years she wore long brunette braids. She shared rooms with dogs and cats, her brother, and many Norwegian relatives in the tiny house on Biscayne Way.
Going to church at Augustana Lutheran Church, Astrid and her brother proudly attended the first integrated Lutheran Bible School in the Old South. They also attended regular school at a Catholic school because they provided before and after school day care, as both parents worked. Once the siblings hid from the nuns with a Mormon girl so they would not have to attend mass. Rebelliousness starts early. Later she attended both Lutheran parochial and public schools.
Astrid’s mother sewed steadily which fostered Astrid’s love of fabric and design. She found creative uses for an amazing store of fabrics when she and her brother sorted through their parents’ house after their deaths.
The family took trips around the country, in either a big second hand Buick or Cadillac, often camping along the way, venturing often to Mexico. A voracious reader and top student, she graduated from Sam Houston High School long after LBJ taught there. Hosting a foreign exchange student from Mexico and being one herself, opened a window on the larger world for Astrid.
She began her extensive education at Rice University as a scholarship student. She then attended the School of Hard Knocks in Haight Ashbury, San Francisco, CA. Remaining in California, she studied molecular pathology at the USCD School of Medicine. Scandinavian studies were her focus at UC Berkeley, emphasizing Norwegian - the language of her heritage which she used when living in Bergen, Norway for a year. Botany at UC Berkeley and at ASU, collecting degrees, friends, a husband, and a baby along the way.
She and husband, Don Fillers, honeymooned by backpacking through Europe and later created a home for their child, Alexander Jay Fillers, in Tempe, AZ. Since her former husband Don preceded Astrid in death, Zander is being guarded and lovingly cared for by his paternal cousin, Jennifer Fillers Martin.
Astrid was the owner and creator of RunzwithScissors, a repurposed design business that gave Astrid a new purpose in life. Her work with FABRIC in the Phoenix area added many new friends to her Gigsville/AZ Burners/Burning Man family and her Down Syndrome support groups. Often living by the motto “Safety Third”, Astrid is remembered by her family of friends as a voracious reader, a bundle of crazy talent, a kind shoulder of support, a feminist mentor, a spunky spirited scientist, a scrappy entrepreneur, an advocate, an artist. She encouraged and inspired others and could out macgyver Macgyver.
Her family of friends wishes her to Rest in Power. Her family wishes her to Rest in Peace. Astrid is mourned by the Gigsville Burning Man community, the FABRIC community, her Down Syndrome support groups, many neighborhood cats, her son, Alexander Jay Fillers with guardian Jennifer Fillers Martin, her brother Peter Olafsen and wife Becky Olafsen, nephews Philip (Michelle) Olafsen and Nathan Olafsen, her cousins Johanne (John Crowther) Gebhardt, Elaine (Joan Bengston) Gebhardt, and Carleton (Beth) Gebhardt.
