- [S3145] Murder Charge against Frank Clow - Stanislaus County Weekly - 31 Aug 1877, (Name: Stanislaus County Weekly News; Location: Stanislaus CA; Date: 31 Aug 1877;), Frank Clow charged with murder of J Patterson.
We learn that Frank Clow, the man charged with the murder of J Patterson on the 21st of this month on the Chowchilla river, Mariposa county, was yesterday committed to answer before the grand jury for the crime of murder without bail.
The citizens of Mariposa are very much excited over the affair as it is considered the most cold blooded and cowardly murder that has ever taken place in the county.
Patterson was an old and inoffensive rancher, long a resident of and highly respected in the county, never interfering with any one. About two months ago he lost his wife, leaving four children, the oldest about six years, and tbe youngest about three months. It appears Clow had jumped Patterson's ranch and litigation was pending in regard to it, creating bad blood between the parties. On tbe morning of tbe 21st of this month Patterson had gone out to catch a horse when it is charged, Clow saw him and shot the old man in the back with a Remington rifle, killing him instantly. The evidence is purely circumstantial but so far seems to point to Clow as the murderer. The friends of the deceased haye retained Mr W E Turner of Modesto to prosecute. The trial will take place some time in November.
