Wilbert John Turk, 39, an oil worker, was fatally injured when he was knocked from an upper platform of a derrick and fell onto a railing 50 feel below late last night.
The accident occurred near the Cat Canyon Road, approximately 12 miles southwest of Santa Maria. A rotary helper, Turk was working with LW Baggs, the driller, when the drilling line whipped and struck him, according to EJ Hoover of the Hoover Drilling company, his employer.
He died enroute to Santa Maria in a city ambulance driven by Police Sgt Homer Bitner. The body was taken to the Dudley mortuary, Where services are pending.
Deputy Sheriffs Virgil Alexander and John Rabska were called to the scene. They are completing an investigation of the accident.
The victim had been employed at the drilling operation since April 27, according to Hoover. Born in Betteravia, he attended school in Santa Maria and is survived by his father, Louis G Turk, and two brothers, Albert Turk of Santa Maria and Allen Turk of Santa Ynez
