A Negro preacher and a veteran rural mail carrier faced prison sentences today for mail theft. The two were sentenced in federal district court here yesterday after pleading guilty to charges and asking probated sentences. The preacher, Arthur V Ware, pastor of the Church of the Living God and described as a trusted employe of the Paducah Post Office for 19 years, was given two and a half years for stealing money from first class letters. He is 54.
Cecil Weatherspoon, 54, Fulton, was given two years in prison for converting to his own use cash paid to him by Fulton Rural Route patrons for postal money - orders Weatherspoon, nearing retirement, was accused of what postal Inspectors termed "kiting," using cash paid to him for money orders for short periods of time and altering receipts to cover up delayed distribution of funds. Inspectors said Weatherspoon replaced most of the money order funds but was $40 to $50 behind when arrested last summer.
Ware admitted stealing about $4,450 from letters between September, 1946, and the time of his arrest last April.
