- [S3366] Obituary of Lula Bagwell - Clarksville Leaf-Chronicle - 1994, (Name: The Leaf-Chronicle; Location: Clarksville TN; Date: 9 Nov 1994;), ONE OF COUNTY'S FIRST ELECTED WOMEN DIES AT 77.
Lula W Bagwell, former Montgomery County Court Clerk and one of Montgomery County's first elected female county government officials, died Monday at Clarksville Memorial Hospital. She was 77. The funeral will be Thursday at Neal-Tarpley Funeral Home with Geoffrey Sikes and Tillman Taylor officiating.
Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery.
Mrs Bagwell worked in the clerk's office for 22 years before being selected by the Montgomery County Quarterly Court to serve the unfinished term of Foard Harris. She was elected to the position in 1978. Her tenure as county court clerk was from 1976 until 1982.
"She was a trusted county employee," said Chancery Court Judge Alex Darnell. "She had a very even disposition. By and large, that even temper and her intellect helped her take on the job of county court clerk.
"l remember that in that position, Mrs Bagwell was always receptive to requests from the public," he said. "Mrs Bagwell began her career in the clerk's office in 1954 as deputy court clerk. Before joining the county offices, she was an accountant with the Federal Housing Authority at Fort Campbell, KY, and was a bookkeeper at the Double Cola Bottling Company for five years.
It was in her role as county clerk that Clarksville Fire Chief Eugene Keel knew her best. Although her candidacy crossed gender standards, her clerkship was an obvious progression.
"Everyone accepted her well because she had worked in the office for years. She knew the job and was more than qualified," said Keel, who worked with Mrs Bagwell's husband, former Assistant Fire Chief Lester Theron Bagwell. "Mrs Bagwell was a nice lady and well admired," Keel said. Mrs. Bagwell was born Feb. 27, 1917, in Ethridge, a daughter of Alfred Walker and Lillie West Walker.
She was a member of Madison Street Church of Christ and former member of the Clarksville Area Chamber of Commerce.
In addition to her husband, survivors include a stepson, Bobby Bagwell, Lemore CA; a daughter, Rita Schrimpshire, Clarksville; two stepdaughters, Joann Hale, Clarksville, and Betty Dunn, Tacoma WA; a sister, Ethel Stinson, Shreveport LA; 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Pallbearers will be Joe Knobel, Tommy Shrader, Ricky Carney, Mike Rittenberry, Louie Perry, Butch Perry, Eugene Keel and Buff Albright.
