      Mary Joan Kindig Worthen, a former resident of Cedar Rapids for 50 years before moving to Oregon in 1975, and a recent resident of Rogue River, Ore, made a spiritual transition of life on Nov 8, 1996. Mary Joan was born May 21 1925, in Cedar Rapids. She married John L. Worthen of Vinton on June 30, 1944. While living in Cedar Rapids, Mrs. Worthen was a member of American Business Women's Association Triangle No. 64 and a charter member of the Fifth Edition Chapter. In 1968, she was voted "Woman of the Year" by the American Business Association's local chapter. She also was a member of the Soroptimist Club, Chapel Society of First Presbyterian Church and St. Luke's Hospital Auxiliary. In addition, she was a charter member of Faith United Methodist Church and founder of the Church Secretaries Association of Cedar Rapids and Marion. Survivors include her husband, John; their son, the Rev J David Worthen and wife Joanie of Mcpherson kS; three granddaughters, Heidi Worthen Gamble and husband Jason of Berkeley CA, Heather Worthen of Columbus OH, and Holly Worthen of Mcpherson KS; a brother, William G Kindig and wife Maxine of Cedar Rapids; and nine nieces and nephews. Burial of the cremated remains will be in the "Garden of the Cross" section at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery, Cedar Rapids, before the memorial service. A Memorial Service will be conducted by the Rev J David Worthen and family at 2 pm on Dec 28, 1996, at First Presbyterian Church, Cedar Rapids. The family will receive guests in the fellowship hll following the service. Memorials should be sent to John L Worthen.

      John L Worthen, age 84, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, died peacefully in his sleep on Sunday, July 20, 2008, at the home of his son, the Rev J David Worthen.
      He was born on Sept. 9, 1923, in Vinton, Iowa, the son of the late John M. and Hazel (Lindsey) Worthen. On June 30, 1944, John married Mary Joan Kindig of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Together, they shared a faith-filled, loving relationship for over 52 years. She preceded him in death on Nov. 8, 1996.
      An accomplished salesman, John spent most of his career in the promotion, sales and design of Aggregate Processing Machinery, in various regions of the country.
      He was an avid golfer, with one of his proudest achievements being walking and playing 54 holes of golf on his 81st birthday. He was a longtime Presbyterian.
      He will be missed by his son and daughter-in-law, the Rev J David and Joanie Worthen of Marion; and his three granddaughters and their families, the Rev Heidi Gamble of Culver City, Calif., her husband the Rev. Jason Gamble and their children, Hannah and Madeleine; Heather Hendrix of Mansfield, her husband David Hendrix, and their children Kylie and Sarah; and Holly Worthen of Chapel Hill NC.
      A private family service will be conducted in Marion, by his son, the Rev J David Worthen. A graveside service will then be held at 2 pm Saturday, July 26, 3008, in "The Garden of the Cross" at Cedar Memorial Cemetery in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Local arrangements have been entrusted to Denzer-Farison-Hottinger and Snyder Funeral Home.
