    3. [S591] Onley Winsor, History of the ancient Winsor family in the United States, (Name: LW Winsor; Location: Providence RI; Date: 1847;), Winsor, Olney. A genealogical account of the ancient Winsor family in the United States… Providence, L. W. Winsor, 1847.
THE WINSOR FAMILY. By English history, it appears that in the unsettled and san- guinary days of the fifteenth century, Lord Edward Windsor, a Roman Catholic, was beheaded ; but it is not recollected on what particular charge, or whether of a civil, political or religious nature ; but most probably of the latter. The family records state, that in the reign of Henry the Seventh, Windsor Castle, with the lands about it, was presented by the family to the monarch, who enlarged and improved, and converted it into a royal castle and residence, and in honor of the donors, continued its ancient name, which it bears to the present day ; and that in the reign of Henry VIIT., Robert Windsor, a Roman Catholic knight of influence, probably a son or grandson of Edward, raised an army to defend a monastery against the power of the Protestants. Most probably it was in consequence of the above related circumstances, that the name and the arms of the family were left out of the new book of heraldry, revised A. D. , but they were preserved by the emigrant, and are now with the family. Robert Windsor, named above, had a son Samuel, he had a son John, who had a son Samuel, whose son Joshua emigrated to America, and settled in Providence, A. D. 1638, and was the an- cestor of the families of Winsors in this State. He was one of twenty who paid the thirty pounds, the amount of the first pur- chase of Providence of the natives, on their being admitted equal sharers therein with Roger Williams, the first purchaser, and the #% + -*♦' twelve others who had come before to his asylum. On his arrival at Providence, it appears that he had left the let- ter d out of the family name — therefore his posterity have uni- formly followed his manner of spelling it (Winsor). By his writings that remain, he appears to have been a person of considerable talents and education, and of a serious and religi- ous turn of mind ; but no mention is made of his being a member of any particular church ; nor does it appear by any records, whe- ther he was a married man or not, when he came to Providence, or whom he did marry ; but it is my opinion, from the light I have obtained on the subject, with the attendant circumstances, that he was a married man before he came here, and that he brought his wife with him. He had one son, Samuel, and three daughters, Sarah, Susanna, and Mary. This Samuel married Mercy Waterman, widow of Resolved Waterman, of Warwick, youngest daughter of Roger Williams, by whom he had three children, Samuel, Joshua and Hannah. Sarah married Tyler, Susanna married Turner, and Mary married Carey, or Casey, and all the daughters settled in Massachusetts, eastward of Boston, and had families of chil- dren. Some of their posterity have visited their relations in this State within the last fifty years. The second American born Samuel was a Deacon of the an- cient Baptist church in Providence, established by Roger Williams and others, A. D. 1639, for a number of years, and pastor thereof from the year 1733 until his death in November 1758, aged 81 years lacking one day. He married Mercy Harding, of Provi- dence, and had by her two sons, Joseph and Samuel, and seven daughters, Martha, Mary, Mercy, Hannah, Lydia, Deborah and Freelove. The first American born Joshua was co-pastor of the Baptist church in Smithfield for a number of years, until his death on the tenth of October, 1752, in the 71st year of his age. He married Mary Barker, of Newport, and had by her two sons, Joshua and Samuel, and three daughters, Sarah, Susanna and Mary. His first wife dying, he married Deborah Harding, sister to his brother Samuel's wife, and had by her two sons, Abraham and John. Hannah married Daniel Angell, of Smithfield, from whom came a large branch of the Angell family in that town and other parts of the State. The second Samuel's Childrens' Marriages, and their Chil- dren, fyc. Joseph married Deborah Mathewson, of Scituate, and had by her five sons and seven daughters, viz : Abraham ; married Roby Keech, of Glocester, and had a large family of children. Amos ; married Mary Bushee, of Glocester, and had a large family of children. Christopher ; married Sarah Smith, of Scituate, or Cranston, and had two or three children, and went to the western part of Virginia, where she died ; and he married again, and removed to New Madrid on the west side of the Mississippi. Whether any children by the last wife, not known. Anan ; married Amey Angell, of Smithfield, and had a large family of children. Samuel ; married Marcy Healy, of Pawtucket — no children. Amey ; married Joseph Col well, of Scituate — had children. He died, and she married Charles Field, and had more children. Deborah ; married Richard Smith, of Glocester, and had a family of children. Lillis ; married Nathan Paine, of Glocester, and had a family of children. Martha ; married Christopher Colwell, of Glocester, or Scituate, and had a family of children. One daughter died in infancy (not named). Mary ; married Benjamin Comstock, of Providence, and had a large family of children. Thankful ; married Daniel Smith, of Burrilville, and had two or three children. Joseph's first wife djing, he married again, in advanced age, to the widow Potter, of Providence, (formerly the widow of Joshua Angell, of Scituate, one of the sons of Hannah, daughter of the first Samuel Winsor,) nearly of his own age — of course no issue. She is now living (1817) with her son,Abraham Angell, in Scituate, lacks but about two months of being one hundred years old. He succeeded Thomas Knowlton as a Pastor of a separate Bap- tist church in Glocester — was ordained October 31st, 1763, and continued in that relation until his death, in the Summer of 1802, in the 89th year of his age. The church was much scattered in the latter days of his life, and I believe has no visible existence in union at this time. Samuel succeeded his father as Pastor of the Baptist church in Providence, was ordained in June, 1759, and continued there un- til 1771, when a division took place in the church, and he, with the Deacons and a majority of the other male members of the church and the country part of the society, built them a meeting house in Johnston, about three miles west of Providence Bridge, established themselves there, and continued steadfast in the general principles and practice of their fathers. He continued their pas- tor until his death, on the 26th of January, 1803, in the 81st year of his age. He married in early life with Lydia Olney, daughter of John Olney, of North Providence, (grandson of the first Tho- mas Olney, of Providence, who succeeded Roger Williams as pas- tor of the church first established there,) by whom he had four children, viz : Lucy, Rhoda, Isaac and Olney. His first wife dy- ing, he married Anne Winsor, daughter of his cousin, Deacon Joshua Winsor, by whom he had ten children, viz : Lydia, Marcy, Jeremiah, James, Hannah, Benjamin, Elizabeth, Waite and Hul- dah — the other died in infancy. They married as follows, viz : Lucy married Joseph Spears, of Johnston, had one daughter, Lucy, who married Zeph. Graves. Rhoda married Peleg Williams, Jr., of Johnston, and had four sons and four daughters. Isaac married Amey Waterman, daughter of John Waterman, of Johnston (miller), and had six sons and four daughters. Olney married Freelove Waterman, daughter of Charles Wa- terman, of Johnston, and had by her four children, viz : Nancy, John Olney, Lemuel and Prudence; all of whom, except Nancy, died in infancy. His first wife dying, he married Hope Thurber, daughter of Samuel Thurber, of Providence, by whom he had one daughter, Susan Jenks Winsor, born in Alexandria, Virginia. Lydia married Noah Farnum, of Smithfield, and had five sons and six daughters. Marcy unmarried. Jeremiah died in infancy. James married Betsey Randall, of Cranston, and had six sons and one daughter. Hannah married Nehemiah Hawkins, of Johnston, and had five sons and five daughters. Benjamin married Zelota Angell, daughter of Job Angell, of Smithfield, and had by her two sons and two daughters. She dying, he married Lydia Hawkins, daughter of John Hawkins, of Smithfield. No children. Elizabeth married Allen Pooler, of Foster, and had three sons and two daughters. Waite unmarried. Huldah married Benjamin Brown, of Johnston ; had three sons and two daughters. Marriages of the second Samuel Winsor's daughters, Martha married Robert Colwell, of Glocester, and had a large family of children. Mary married Fisher Potter, of Scituate, and had a large family of children. Mercy married her cousin Nedabiah Angell, of Providence, and had a large family of children. Hannah married James Olney, of North Providence, and had a large family of children. I^ydia married her cousin, John Angell, of Smithfield, and had a large family of children. Deborah married Charles Olney, of North Providence, and had a large family of children. Freelove married Jonathan Jenckes, of Pawtucket, and had a large family of children. Marriages of the Children of the first American born Joshua. Joshua married Freeborn Olney, of Providence, and had by her 8 three sons and two daughters. She dying, he married Abigail Smith, daughter of William Smith, of Smithfield, and had by her one son and one daughter. Samuel married Elizabeth Smith, daughter of William Smith, of Smithfield, and had one son, William, who married Abigail Whipple, and had six sons and two daughters. Abraham married Mary Smith, daughter of said William Smith, and had by her five children, who all died in infancy. She dying, he married her sister, Sarah Smith, and had by her four sons and four daughters. One of each died in infancy ; the others married as follows : Mary ; married Edward Thurber, and had a large family of children. Abraham ; married Nancy Waterman, daughter of John Wa- terman, of Providence, and had five children. Sarah ; married William Waterman, of Johnston, and had seven children. Augustus ; married Nancy Waterman, daughter of Andrew, and had children. She dying, he married the widow Martha Eddy, and had one child. Lucinea ; married Stephen Randall, of Providence, and had a family of children. Daniel ; married Rachal Smith, daughter of Edward Smith, of North Providence. No children. Sarah married Othniel Mathewson, of Smithfield. He lived to be one hundred and one years old. Susanna married Daniel Smith, of Smithfield, brother to her brother's wives, and had a family of children. Mary married Benjamin Smith, of Glocester, and had a family of children. John married Mary Smith, daughter of Solomon Smith, of Glocester, and had by her seven sons and ten daughters. She dying, he married Phebe Dexter, widow of William Dexter, of Smithfield, by whom he had two sons and one daughter, making the whole number of his children twenty. He was for many years pastor of the Old Baptist Church in Smithfield, in union with the old church in Glocester, under the care of Elders Mitchell and Brown, &c. ; but the members of both churches widely dispersed after the Revolutionary war, so that when he died, in the year 1806, in the 86th year of his age, they were very small, and are now nearly extinct. Thus I have collected, from various family records and minutes, as general an account of the Winsor family, since their ancestor Joshua Windsor came from England to Providence, A. D. 1638, as can be obtained. I have purposely omitted all official additions or titles to any of the names, for I could not possibly give all ; and, moreover, because I think them entirely useless. A plain name is sufficient for any citizen of a country which has discarded the principles upon which such empty distinctions are founded. May the bountiful Giver of all our civil, political and religious blessings, for ever preserve the citizens of this happy nation from being carried away by sounding names and titles, from what- ever quarter, to the sacrifice of their greatest blessings and highest privileges ! It will be observed that I have brought down my own imme- diate branch of the family, and some parts of others, later than some others are. This is because I obtained more information and had more personal knowledge respecting them. I do not find that any of the males of the family emigrated from this State, or very few from the county of Providence, until after the American Revolution, although the family have been almost universally agriculturalists. They are now spread North, South and West, from Vermont to Missouri. In reading Lewis and Clark's expedition of discovery up the Missouri and across to the Western Ocean and back, in 1804 and 1805, I observe that Richard Winsor was one of that intrepid and persevering party. He doubtless was a son of some one of the emigrants from this State to the Western Country. OLNEY WINSOR, Of the fifth American generation, in the 6oth year of his age. Providence, R. I., Dec. 14, 1817. P. S. By the Waterman Family Records, it appears that Re- solved Waterman, who married Mercy Williams, youngest daugh- ter of Roger Williams, was son of Richard Waterman, one of the first settlers of Providence, and his wife Anne, the daughter of the 10 first Thomas Olney — that Resolved had five children, viz : Rich- ard, John, Resolved, Mary and Waite — that he died and she mar- ried Samuel Winsor, the first in the Winsor account, and had by him three children, viz : Samuel, Joshua and Hannah. Samuel Winsor dying, she married John Rhodes, of Pawtuxet, and had by him two sons, viz : William and John. Nehemiah Rhodes, family, late of Cranston, near Pawtuxet, sprung from one of these sons. Resolved Waterman, son of the above Resolved and Mercy, was great grandfather to Freelove Waterman, first wife of Olney Winsor. MEMORANDUM. In the year 1818, Samuel Eddy, secretary of this State, had occasion to go into the county of Plymouth, Massachusetts, to ex- amine the ancient records. On his return he informed me, that he found the name of Winsor frequently occur ; and that there was a considerable family dwelling there — that the Christian names of John, Joshua, Samuel, William, &c, were common, as among our family in this State — and that the presumption was strong that they were descendants from the same English stock — and advised me to make inquiry. Soon after this, perusing a list of Postmasters in Massachusetts, I found Thomas Windsor, (as his name was spelt in the list,) Postmaster in Duxbury^ in the county of Plymouth, only about forty miles from Providence. I wrote to him the 20th July, 1818, requesting information respecting the family, emigration, &c. On the 18th of August, in that year, I received a kind and very acceptable answer to my queries re- specting the ancestry of the family, as far as he could obtain. He states that his " Great grandfather, William Winsor, came to this country from the West of England, and brought with him two children, Samuel and William, the former of whom was his grand- father — that his father's name was Joshua, the second son of a family of eight sons and two daughters, all residents in the town of Duxbury, except, two ; one of whom died early in life — the other, Peter, resident in the adjoining town of Kingston. Their names are Nathaniel, Joshua, Samuel, William, John, Peter, James, Rhody and Betsey, who with their descendants amount to about 11 one hundred and fifty persons, all of whom are directly or indirectly dependent on navigation or commerce." He did not state the time of emigration. " The family have always spelt the name W-i-n-s-o-r." No doubts remain in my mind, but that they are from the ori- ginal family on the Thames, who probably dispersed in the con- fused times, mentioned in the foregoing genealogy. It is very surprising, that such a large family of our name should reside so near us for several generations, and we have no know- ledge of them ; especially, as Mr. Eddy informed me, that there were among them persons of property and respectability in church and state. In the year 1789, when I resided in Alexandria, Virginia, while at the tobacco warehouse yard for the purchase of tobacco, I saw a cask marked Winzer — inquired for the owner — found him — was a man between fifty and sixty years of age, very illiterate, could give no account of his family as to from whence they came. He had the appearance of a German, lived in Loudon county, about sixty miles west of Alexandria, had a small plantation, made one or two hogsheads of tobacco, some corn, and a little wheat, yearly. Within a few years, I have seen an advertisement in New York papers, by a Mr. Windsor from London, as Teacher of a School upon a large and extensive plan ; have no other information re- specting him. I have frequently observed the name of Windsor in the list of officers in the English navy, all of whom used the d in the name, in the public lists. The town and castle in England, as also the numerous towns and counties in America, are univer- sally so spelled. O. W. ATTESTATION. The foregoing genealogical account and memoranda, were copied from the original manuscripts of the above signed Olney Winsor, now belonging to his daughters, Misses Nancy and Susan J. Winsor, both of Providence. JOSEPH WINSOR. East Greenwich, R. L, Dec 18, 1846. 12 Descendants of the second American born Joshua. In the above genealogical table the second American born Joshua Winsor, son of the first American born Joshua, is stated to have married Freeborn Olney, of Providence, by whom he had three sons, Charles, Jeremiah, and , and two daughters, Mary and Anne ; and she dying he then married Abigail Smith, daughter of William Smith, of Smithfield, and had by her one son and one daughter. This daughter, Freelove Winsor, died unmarried, in the year 1836 in the 80th year of her age. Elisha Winsor, the son, married Barbary Healy, daughter of John Healy, of Providence, and had two sons and five daughters, viz : Abigail, Phebe, Welcome, Waite, Alice, Elisha and Harriet.
