MARY ANN KERRUISH •
Formerly Mary Ann Lowney, was born in Laxey, Isle of Man, June 27, 1843, and passed away at her home Festus, Mo., November 24, 1928 at the age of 85 years, 4 months and 28 days. Her father, a sea-faring man, came to America and decided to locate here and sent for his family and she at the age of 7 and her mother made the trip in a Baffling vessel which required six weeks for the voyage.
They located in St. Louis where her father was Mississippi River captain. She spent the remainder of her childhood in St Louis, becoming mother to her motherless brother John and sister Liaxie at an early age, and during her early marriage life mothering two of her cousins children with her own family. Being in St Louis during the Civil War, she often related incidents about the recruiting of the Federal Army at Camp Jackson.
Shortly after the war she married John Kerruish, also of Laxey, who preceded her to the great beyond 43 years ago. To this union were born eight children, four of whom survive her: Mr. Edmund Kerruish, Miss Katherine Kerruish, Mrs. Nellie Berry and Mrs. Ray Townsend. Most of her life was spent in the vicinity of St. Louis and in Jefferson County. She located on a farm one mile south of Festus about 1877 and in 1890 she and her son entered the mercantile business in Festus. Her home was always a hospitable one and she remained active in its duties until her last illness.
January 24, 1886 she united with the Presbyterian Church and for about 43 years has been a faithful member.
The funeral service was held in the Presbyterian church of Festus, Tuesday, November 27, and she was laid to rest in Gamel Cemetery.
